In aquaculture, the sex of some species is closely related to the economic value of the species. In particular, for turtles, males have the advantage over females of fast growth, large size, thick body and less fat. The sex of most animals is determined during fertilization. However, for turtles, tortoises and crocodiles, sex is determined after fertilization. The temperature in the embryo's development environment is the deciding factor in whether a male or female will form. This is called temperature-dependent sex.
